The Zimbabwe Anti-Sanctions Trust (ZAST) has expressed its sympathy with Cuba following what has been described as the worst fire in the Caribbean Island nation’s history after several people were killed while 40 percent of the country’s main fuel storage facility was destroyed.

The large-scale fire erupted at a supertanker base in Matanzas province when lightning struck a fuel tank on Friday.

In a statement yesterday, ZAST reaffirmed its sympathy and support to Cuba, while expressing their condolences to families that lost loved ones to the fire.

“As the Zimbabwe Anti-Sanctions Trust (ZAST), we received with great shock, news of a massive electrical discharge that occurred at the Supertanker Base in the Cuban province of Matanzas on Friday, August 5 resulting in a large-scale fire in one of the fuel tanks.

“We extend our thoughts and sympathy to the families and friends of those who perished, were injured, or are still missing because of the horrific fire.”

ZAST applauded the international community for lending a helping hand to the people of Cuba, saying the act was encouraging.

“We have been following the developments, particularly the rapid intervention of Venezuela and Mexico, among others. As an anti-sanctions lobby group, we are cognisant that this disaster is a pinch of salt on the wound for the people of Cuba, as the country grapples with the impact of sanctions just like Zimbabwe.”
