Next Kirsty Coventry could come from Banket

IT was a beautiful day with a golden sunshine.

A sweet scent was drifting from the blooming flowers.

This wonderful day was graced by the Almighty God, as Banket Primary School’s rival sports houses — Hunyani and Sable — were ready to get into battle.

The swimming competition started in the early hours of an exciting Saturday. The contest was stiff and breathtaking.

All one could hear were echoes from the parents as they cheered on their children, “Sable go, go Hunyani go.”

The shouting battle saw the contenders getting in vigorous competition. Each house was battling for a trophy and a point to add to the house.

Our best swimmers in the Under-9 category were Noviyo Mazvimbakupa and Alexandra Tafirenyika. The under- 10 category had Kupakwashe Dzumbunu and Tinevimbo Pasi, while the Under- 11s had Drisha Deva and Denzel Patsikadova taking to the waters. The Under-12s had William Cunningham and Alice Diamon while the Under-13s had Scholastic Nguvo and Tendekai Sibaya.

At the end of the spectacular event, Sable scored 288 points against Hunyani’s 224.

Sable walked away with the golden trophy.

Even though there had to be a winner and a loser, everyone had great fun.

While soccer is the most popular sport at most schools in Zimbabwe, the Banket community has fallen in love with a marine sport. Banket Primary School even prides itself as a “sport and academic factory”.

Our vice sports director, Mr Simbarashe Charakupa, believes that our school is on its way to discovering the next Kirsty Coventry.

“Banket is transforming from being a growth point into a fully-fledged town. This is more or less a rural area, and this is where we want to unearth the country’s next best swimmers,” said Mr Charakupa.

“Scouting for talent is usually done for soccer and atheletics. Swimming is often neglected, which is why we have taken it upon ourselves to fish out this talent and contribute to national sport development in our small way,” he said.

Romeo Gasa, who hails from Banket, provided entertainment at the event.

The children and their parents enjoyed some braai, music and danced the day away. Others had their faces painted while others spent some time in the jumping castle.
