The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association is battling to secure funds to send the men’s Under-21 team to the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Cyprus later this month.
The financially crippled ZVA also failed to fund the Under-23 side’s participation at the recently held World Championships in Poland.

They are now racing against time ahead of the tournament which runs from July 23-27 in the city of Larnaca.
ZVA secretary-general Ringisai Mapondera disclosed that they are seeking at least US$15 000.

“We will fight till the last minute to secure funds for the team, we do not have anything at the moment but remain positive that we will send the team for the World Championships.

“Economic challenges are being faced by almost everyone hence it has been difficult to get sponsorship, but we will not throw in the towel,” he said.

Zimbabwe booked their place at the tournament after coming third in the qualifiers held in Mozambique in May.

Youngsters Keith Machakaire of Churchill High School and Collen Peters, of Cornway, won three of their five games on their way to qualification.

They will now be keeping their fingers crossed that the trip to Cyprus materialises.
