MANY people have a misconception about the military, as they assume the armed forces are only about drills and weapons.

In that regard, they believe that by joining the army, one has to go to war.

But that is far from it.

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) career fair held recently was an eye-opener.

We learnt that the ZNA is multifaceted. As such, there are different career opportunities in the army.

The careers are in the medical field; civil, electrical and mechanical engineering; aviation; law; teaching; pastoral work; catering; and textile designing, among other areas.

Schools whose learners attended the fair included the hosts Mutoko Government High, Mutoko Central High and Munashe Private High.

The highly motivated ZNA team was led by Major Allen Chagonda from Cranborne Barracks in Harare.

The session started off with singing of the national anthem, after which the learners were briefed on what is on offer at the ZNA for young Zimbabweans and others.

The most encouraging thing about the military is that outstanding individuals have higher chances of being promoted.

The army team went on to educate the attendees on landmine threats, especially for those living in the country’s borders. Most of the landmines were planted by Rhodesian soldiers, as they unsuccessfully tried to harm freedom fighters during the liberation struggle.

The army encouraged the public to report any suspicious objects they come across to the relevant authorities.

The occasion was punctuated by song and dance, with the learners joining the ZNA band in the performances.
