STUDENTS from three high schools who attended the Zimpapers Junior Media Club workshop in Harare on Thursday expressed their excitement to be participants in a project that aims to equip them with basic knowledge on the journalism profession.

This was the first group of participants in Harare.

The first programme to identify young talent was held in Mutare in March with the third one scheduled for Bulawayo at a date to be advised.

Drawn from Queen Elizabeth High School, Mufakose 2 High and Destiny Achievers Group of Schools, the students had the opportunity to be addressed by veterans of the profession who also hold senior managerial positions within the organisation.

These included Zimpapers Editorial Executive, Mr William Chikoto, The Sunday Mail Editor, Mrs Victoria Ruzvidzo, ZTN Head of Output, Mr Ishmael Ndlovu, Suburban Editor, Mr Itai Musengeyi and Star FM Head of Programming, Mr Steve Vickers.

“We are committing to work and walk with you for a long time. We will be available to help you to produce high quality content for yourselves. If you want your articles to be published in these national papers, write that article and submit to the headmasters and if they are happy, there will be a platform to also publish your work,” said Mr Chikoto.

The students were equipped with information and skills on newspaper writing, radio and television broadcasting. They were also taught how to make best use of social media platforms.

Queen Elizabeth High senior prefect, Modesta Binguri said she was impressed by the presentation on media and television which inspired her to be a presenter one day.

“I learnt that for us to be good journalists, we have to practice ethical behaviour mostly on social media and the issue of scholarships is really a great opportunity for us as we will push to excel and enhance our skills,” she said.

As the first batch of students to attend the workshop, Tafadzwanashe Mashonganyika from Destiny Achievers Group of schools thanked Zimpapers for giving them the rare opportunity of interacting with veteran journalists.

“We thank Zimpapers experts for this day. It will surely go a long way in positively impacting my career plans. This is a special programme,” he said.

From Mufakose 2 High, Mercy John said she was really excited to represent her school as one of the pioneers of the Zimpapers Junior Media Club.

“l am really excited about this programme and assure you that when we go to our school, we will tell them about the goodness of being part of this journey,” said John.

Zimpapers Junior Media Club is a project which has been introduced by the largest integrated media company in the country as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.

It aims to provide pupils with mentorship in writing, broadcasting as well as equipping them critical media skills.

Zimpapers has several newspapers, a television station, four radio stations and various digital platforms.
