Zimpapers Junior Media Club was launched in Mashonaland East on Tuesday as part of the media group’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

At least 40 learners were part of the training workshop, which introduced them to the dynamics of print, radio and television journalism.

Participants also got an insight on the impact of social media on journalism.

Zimpapers group editorial executive Mr William Chikoto, Suburban editor Mr Itai Musengeyi and Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN) head of output Mr Ishmael Ndlovu  had  an opportunity to teach learners relevant media skills.

Mr Chikoto said the actual work will begin after the launch when learners familiarise themselves with practical skills and begin producing content.

“I was just listening to the talent here … the confidence, the voices, everything, you can see that there is talent here,” said Mr Chikoto.

Learners were encouraged to maximise on opportunities that were being provided by the company to be future leaders.

The programme offers opportunities for exposure through training and producing content for dedicated pages in Zimpapers publications.

Scholarships will be awarded to excelling learners.

“The way this works is we are coming in to assist what you are doing. There are media clubs here. We are just giving you skills to say how do you do it better,” added Mr Chikoto.

“The director here was telling us amazing things that are being done at this school (Munashe Private High) …  all those are inspirational stories that we hope you will write.

“You must produce videos about it, photographs, news articles, and the whole country will learn to say in Mutoko there is a school that does such innovative things.”

Zimpapers is carrying out various CSR projects in schools.

In Chimanimani, Zimpapers reconstructed a classroom block at Chikukwa Primary School after the destruction caused by Cyclone Idai.

The company also a drilled a borehole for Shungu Dzevana Children’s Home to ease water challenges.
