THE Ministry of Sport, Arts and Recreation has taken the first steps into introducing a new National Sports Council, with the structure expected to be  put in place for a six-eight-month trial run at the end of March.

Addressing the media Thursday, Minister Kirsty Coventry said the trial run is aimed at identifying and ironing out any kinks before going before Parliament for approval.

“As you may all know, as of last year, we had requested as a Ministry to repeal and amend the Sport and Recreation Act. It was approved by Cabinet” said the Minister.

“After numerous conversations in-house, with the existing Sports and Recreation Commission and after looking at the best practices regionally, continentally and internationally on how sport associations, ministries are currently working together, we have now come up with this proposed structure for the Zimbabwe Sports Council.

“Unfortunately, we can only formalise this structure once the draft and amendments are made, approved and the required consultations are made and it goes through Parliament.

“That process obviously takes a bit of time, and so the discussions that we have had with the national associations – under advice from our legal advisor and the Attorney General’s office – is that we could trial this proposed structure while we wait.

“We have engaged the national associations to see if they would be interested to trial out this proposed structure over the next six to eight months, and so far the feedback has been positive,” she said.

The Zimbabwe Sports Council will be a 15-member board, which will consist of ministerial appointments, national association-elected members and a spot for the Special Olympic president.

At the top of the hierarchy will be a chairperson, who will constitute one of the seven ministerial appointments, and that person will be deputised by two vice-chairpersons.

The two deputies will be the Zimbabwe Olympic president, of which Admire Masenda is sitting, and the Zimbabwe National Paralympic president, currently being Michael Bulagango.

It will also constitute 12 board members, five of which will be appointed by the sport associations, six by the ministry, with a spot has been reserved for the Special Olympics president.
