THE Zimbabwe swimming team has suffered a huge blow as it has emerged that one of its medal hopefuls, Peter Wetzlar has picked up an injury ahead of the swimming competition set to start tomorrow at the ongoing AUSC Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games.

Wetzlar picked up an injury while competing for Team Zimbabwe in the FINA World Swimming Championships in Qatar. Team Zimbabwe swimming technical manager Lona Riley confirmed the development.

However, she could not shed more light on the extent of Wetzlar’s injury.

“We have a swimmer who is currently injured and since he is in Doha for the FINA championships, I am not sure about the extent of his injury and I don’t know if he is going to be fit for the Games or not because he is not here. However, the team has been practising hard and sessions are going on as per schedule. We promise to do our best when swimming competitions begin,” said Riley.

Other swimmers who are in Doha are James Lawson, who is the captain of the Games team, Robyn Lee, Chad Idensohn and Ratidzo Mutangadura.

Wetzlar was Zimbabwe’s best performer on the first day of the global competition, posting two personal bests in the 100-metre butterfly with a time of 55,9 seconds and the 100-metre backstroke in 57,3 seconds.

The team is expected to jet into the country today.
