VP Chiwenga mourns Okwanga

VICE President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has sent a message of condolence on the death of prominent specialist physician, Dr Nelson Okwanga who succumbed to Covid-19 last Tuesday.

He was 74.

In his condolence message, Dr Chiwenga who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care, described the late physician as a dedicated doctor with interest in diabetes.

“He has left an indelible mark in the medical field as a specialist physician with interest in diabetes.

“Dr Nelson was a good doctor and advisor, a humble, loving family man, a golfer, keen fisherman, a loyal friend endowed with a huge heart, ‘famous’ DJ, and loved by millions of friends.

“May his soul rest in peace,” said Dr Chiwenga .

He chronicled how the doctor, who was Ugandan, arrived from the United Kingdom where he studied medicine and worked in medical facilities in the European country before he joined the Ministry of Health in Zimbabwe.

“He came to Zimbabwe in 1983 from the United Kingdom, joined the Ministry of Health as the first black Government physician at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. He dedicated his working life at the hospital for 29 years until he retired in 2012,” he said.

Dr Okwanga was married to Ester Loveness (now late) and had two children one of them, a daughter who is also late and had remained with a son.

Dr Okwanga was born on April 2 1947 in Aduku, Kwania County, Lango in Uganda.

He went to school in Uganda and then proceeded to the Manchester University in the United Kingdom to study for a medical degree.

Dr Okwanga graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the university and was a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) of the United Kingdom.
