THE president of the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association, Frederick Ndlovu, has expressed confidence in the country’s five candidates to an international referees’ course that is currently running in Harare.

The course, which is being overseen by Belgian Jean-Claude Baccus and the president of the Federation of International Volleyball Rules of the Game Commission, Alexandra James Steel, started last week and will run until October 28.

Ndlovu reckons Nomvelo Mlotshwa, Sibusisiwe Masiyane, Brian Manuel, Spencer Chitate and Liberty Manwa have what it takes to become internationally certified volleyball referees.

The five’s success at the course will bring to nine the number of Zimbabwean international volleyball referees.

“We are not worried about failing, all our candidates know their stuff,” he bragged.

“However, as hosts of this important course, we are excited and anxious at the same time, hosting anything major makes you anxious.

“Hosting such an important event shows the direction we are taking the sport of volleyball in Zimbabwe, with nine international referees we will be among the leading countries in the Zone Six region,” added Ndlovu, who also serves as the secretary-general for Zone Six and a Volleyball Development Commissioner for the continent.

He disclosed that the course’s 18 candidates, drawn from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho, Madagascar, Egypt, Rwanda, Burkina Faso and Cameroon, will be assessed as they take charge of National Volleyball League matches.

“We crafted our national league dates to coincide with this programme so that it could be used to test the candidates and 80 percent of the league games will be officiated by these candidates as part of their exams.

“As Zimbabwe, we made a request to host this event in our meeting with the Confederation of Africa Volleyball president, Dr Amr Elwani, last year because we realised that as Zone Six we were falling short on international referees,” he said.

The country currently has four internationally accredited referees — Leonard Gaize, Sibangane Mashasha, Bekezela Ndlovu and Elliot Mpariwa.
