HARARE City Council has allocated US$7 million for the rehabilitation of Warren Control Pump Station, while US$3 million has been spent so far on rehabilitating Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant to address the capital city’s water woes.
The Government recently provided US$10 million from the devolution fund to the local authority to address the water challenges. Council has acquired five raw water pump sets, valves and associated switchgears that have since been delivered and will be installed soon as part of refurbishments at Morton Jaffray.
City of Harare acting director for water Engineer Victor Musikavanhu said once completed, the project will boost capacity to pump water.
“US$3 million has been used at Morton Jaffray towards rehabilitation of Darwendale Raw Water Pump Station. All the five raw water pump sets, valves and associated switchgear have been delivered but none have been installed yet.
“The project is meant to increase raw water abstraction capacity from Manyame (Darwendale) Dam from the current 150 megalitres per day to 450 megalitres per day,” he said.
Eng Musikavanhu said US$7 million had also been disbursed towards the rehabilitation of Warren Control Pump Station, which is set to be completed by December.
“The project is being undertaken as one project including the ongoing rehabilitation of Warren Control Pump Station, where US$7 million was also disbursed through devolution and is expected to be complete by December 2021, after which the contractor will then move to Morton Jaffray.”
