The United States government has made a tacit admission that it is working with some Zimbabwean Government officials to effect regime change by ousting President Robert Mugabe.

Speaking at George Washington University in the United States last Tuesday, US Assistant Secretary of State (African Affairs) Mrs Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Washington was already preparing for a “post-Mugabe” dispensation.

She revealed that the plot also involves blocking First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe’s ascendancy in Zanu-PF and possibly Government.

“I’m hopeful that the Zimbabwean people will not see that the legacy of Mugabe will be to leave his wife in a position of power,” she was quoted as saying by Telescope News website.

“There will be a post-Mugabe Zimbabwe and we need to start preparing for that eventuality. We need to engage more extensively with civil society, with the Press and we need to start engaging with some Government officials … to press them to bring about changes in their Government so that we can be prepared for that period.”

Mrs Thomas-Greenfield’s comments come as an official with the US embassy in Harare is apparently receiving briefings on classified internal discussions about Zanu-PF succession battles.

US embassy second secretary (parliamentary affairs) Mr Eric Little has been using the Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Programme to access the information.

Twelve Zanu-PF parliamentarians reportedly benefited from the programme’s US$90 000 grant.

Former Zanu-PF Mashonaland West provincial chair Cde Temba Mliswa openly admitted to working with Mr Little, though he dismissed the regime change plot.

Mr Little has also met MDC-T legislators. Sources recently revealed that Washington is trying to get parliamentarians to pass a vote of no confidence on President Mugabe.

The Zanu-PF clique would then also try to oust the party’s First Secretary and President at Congress in December.

Vice-President Mujuru has been linked to the plan. She has reportedly met former US Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Charles Ray secretly on the outskirts of Harare.

University of Zimbabwe political science department head and political analyst Dr Charity Manyeruke said: “It does not come as a surprise that the US government is working with locals in Government to effect regime change. It is a strategy that they have used in many countries across the world.

“Government needs to investigate those who are taking part in such schemes and invoke necessary legal procedures to bring the alleged perpetrators to book. At a party level, the necessary instruments in the code of conduct should also be invoked to punish those found guilty.”
