MUSIC legend Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi on May 30 held a fundraising dinner at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton to contribute to construction of a Methodist in Zimbabwe church building in the town.

Tuku, along with fellow musicians Diana Samukange, Munya Matarutse and Africa Revenge, helped raise US$11 200, surpassing the US$10 000 target.

“We realised that the place we are worshiping at is no longer comfortable, we want a decent place hence coming up with this initiative” said Mrs Daisy Mtukudzi, wife of the superstar. “After consultations with the church we agreed to put our hands to this noble cause. We provided the venue and all the supporting artists that performed. The church provided the food and as a family we are excited to be partners in the work of God.

“You know how much it is to hire Mtukudzi to perform at functions like these, but he is doing it for free only for his Creator,” Mrs Mtukudzi added The church district’s Bishop Tawanda Sungai said this was a Samanyanga show with a difference.

“The difference is that the whole idea of this musical dinner dance is meant to raise funds for a very noble cause. It is a cause for God who is the sustainer and life giver. God is the one who endows us with different gifts.”

Superintended minister for Norton circuit, Reverend Aaron Makiwa, added that surpassing the fundraising target was “a clear indication that the event has lived up to our expectations and as the church we are happy with this achievement”.

He went on: “Since we now have the money I can safely say that construction will start anytime soon.”
