Zimbabwe should prioritise irrigation development, reforestation and afforestation to counter climate change, an expert has said.
University of Zimbabwe-based climatologist Professor Aaron Murwira said: “Industrialisation has caused change of climate since carbon dioxide is injected in the atmosphere. Zimbabwe has been doing a good job of building dams and we should make use of them.
“The country needs to plant more trees so that they can clean the dirt that has been injected into the atmosphere by producing oxygen during photosynthesis. The use of hydro-power like what we do in Kariba, the use of solar energy and wind also minimises change of climate as they do not pollute the atmosphere.”
Prof Murwira added: “Composting and recycling are also other means that can reduce climate change as they do not involve burning which injects smoke into the atmosphere. The climate in Zimbabwe is now variable and farmers should know that. Farmers should treat every year like a drought year and plant drought-resistant crops like rapoko and millet.”
