The trouble with Kenias Mubaiwa

Sunday Mail

MAYBE there is something wrong with the name Kenias Mubaiwa.
Especially the Mubaiwa part.
Yes Kenias is not a name one comes across everyday but when someone called Mubaiwa continues to suffer one election defeat after another defeat one may be forced to assume that the name is dictating the course of events.
Loosely translated Mubaiwa means the one who always gets stabbed or the one who got stabbed.
For the second time in as many Premier Soccer League chairmanship elections, the Dynamos president suffered a heavy defeat last weekend. Peter Dube triumphed 11-4 to become the new Premiership boss and the defeat may have been heavier had ZPC Kariba voted. ZPC Kariba were barred from voting because their chairman was not in attendance.
But what is it that makes Kenias Mubaiwa a difficult candidate to sell to the Premiership clubs?
Certainly it’s not the name alone.
If names had a bearing on these things then Willard Manyengavana would not be the Northern Region Division One chairman. It must be something else, something bigger.
The general feeling among top flight clubs is that Mubaiwa does not approach PSL business with the seriousness it should be accorded.
The DeMbare boss is said to be in the habit of missing meetings and on the few occasions he turns up, dressed like a rap star, he spends most of his time on the phone.
Then there is also the big brother attitude that Dynamos are always accused of, the club allegedly expects to get its way just because it’s Dynamos.
Now against this background the rest of the PSL clubs view any election as an opportunity to send a message to DeMbare, a message that clearly says we are all equal here.
To his credit Mubaiwa is always gracious in defeat and has no intentions of letting another election come and go without his hat in the ring.
“I will not give up, as long as there are elections I will contest,” said Mubaiwa, in pure Egypt Dzinemunhenzva style, soon after his humbling.
“The last time there were only two candidates, myself and Twine (Phiri) and today it is only two again. Maybe the other governors do not want to try, so for elections to happen there must be contestants and if others do not want it I will go for it.
“The governors have spoken, their choice is Peter Dube, that is the man they want to lead them. But I must say the election was free and fair.
“I do not want to be a bad loser, I will continue co-operating with Dube and I wish him good luck in his new journey.”
However, all hope is not lost for the DeMbare boss as there are already efforts to co-opt him into the vice-chairman’s position.
There is a feeling that the PSL hierarchy needs “someone from the northern region” with Dube and chief executive Kenny Ndebele all tracing their routes to Bulawayo, or the southern region as they call it. It’s sad, but true, that 36 years after Independence there is horse trading of candidates based on where they come from instead of what they bring to the table. There shall come a day when such things will end.
Mubaiwa is also needed to act as a bridge between Dube and Ndebele, two men who cannot stand the sight of one another. There is no love lost between the two Bosso sons, it’s so bad they don’t exchange greetings.
