THE 2019 Rainbow Netball Amateur League season will officially get underway next weekend, with the transfer window expected to close on March 23.

These were the biggest takeaways from today’s Rainbow league AGM, after which RANL Secretary General Moses Gukurume made the announcements.

“After having successfully completed our first season in 2018, we expect our season to start next weekend, March 23 to be precise,” Gukurume.

“We have seven new teams that have come on board from the Zimbabwe Netball Association sponsored super league, and four others that were promoted from the regions.

“This brings the total number of teams this season to 22,” he said.

Police teams Mambas, Support Unit, PPU, ZRP Harare have officially joined the ‘amateur’ league and will be joined by Golden Valley, Great Zimbabwe University, Mutare City, Rio Zim, Black Rhinos, Ntabazinduma and Tenux netball club.

During their maiden run, the RANL had a paltry 11 teams to their name, but that number has since doubled.

“We are happy with such a turn out, as it gives us the satisfaction that we did well in the first season.

“Even in our audits, there may have been room for doing better as highlighted by the auditors but for the first season we did great,” he said.

Gukurume said although there are still challenges affiliating to the mother board, they remain determined.

“ZINA remains our motherbody and we are committed to fulfilling the requirements towards affiliation.

“We are not at war with them, in any way, and we simply want to be given a chance, on top of giving the girl child a platform to benefit from their sweat.

“We may have differences, but we are saying let’s put netball interests first and help it grow,” said Gukurume.
