THE annual Harare Agricultural Show, which will take place in the capital city, will run from 22 to 30 August 2014.

The theme is “Sustaining Agricultural Growth”.

This event is an enabling platform for farmers, business community and ordinary people both young and old, to interact and share ideas.

This is an opportunity for businesses to market and sell their products.

This is time for them to be in direct contact with customers and potential customers.

Farmers can showcase and market well-bred animals and reach their target market. As for ordinary people, it provides entertainment, educational and shopping experiences.

Our reliance on technology is everywhere meaning smartphones have taken over our lives including the business world and the farming community. Smartphones continue to lower information barriers across Zimbabwe.

This is already producing significant changes in the lives of the tech-savvy Zimbabweans. The use of Gtel mobile phones has ushered a significant information revolution. The impact of internet access via smartphones is overwhelming. Access to social media networks has given people a platform for self-expression.

Even more importantly, mobile phones are birthing revolutions in important sectors of the economy like Business, Education, Health and Agriculture. Smartphones help with financial services that is, mobile banking, enabling consumers to send and receive money to and from their loved ones.

Digital books help improve literacy rates.

Farmers can also embrace this technology which can be helpful even in a crisis at the farm, tracking weather, keeping up with where equipment is on the farm and keeping in touch with key employees and family members.

Accessing key farm information over the internet is easier via your smartphone.

Gtel has an array of smartphones to choose from that run on Android. One can access different “Apps” on Google Play. We will look at some of the “Apps” that can be of good use.

Worldreader Mobile

Worldreader Mobile features hundreds of short stories, quick reads folks can read whilst travelling. And because short stories are a great way to hook new readers, we hope to uncover millions of new bookworms. Folks can enjoy steamy love stories from Nigeria, exciting adventure capers from South Africa as well as short folktales and fables from all over Africa and Asia.

Worldreader mobile works on almost any screen size and any device that runs on Android.

Farming Instructor

Farming Instructor is a mobile App that provides online and offline agricultural information (text, speeches and animations) to farmers and their communities.

The application is created specifically to inspire youth and all other groups in the society to have the passion to engage in agriculture as the means to self-employment.

With this App, the user or farmer can source all the necessary information related to agriculture, as well as share and comment on other farming tips and advice.

Zimbile

Although not strictly an App, Zimbile helps small businesses enter the online world in a flash.
