Hunt for Greatness
Milton Kamwendo

This is your year; this is your season. Take it on with a bold spirit, burning passion and positive mental attitude. You can change the world and you will change your world. Believe this and work towards it. Think great thoughts, and your mind will open to possibilities. Speak bold colourful and productive words and new thought streams will well up within you. Take bold and determined actions, and everything will begin to move towards you and with you.

Decisions power lives and change things. You do not experience a year, then in due course decide what the year will be like. You make the decision and then follow through daily to make that decision real. Decide once, then manage that decision daily. William Hutchison Murray, talking of the decision to embark on the Himalaya expedition, said: “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.” The moment you decide, providence moves too.

There are some things, thoughts, ways and words you need to quit. Quit thinking like a victim and wallowing in self-pity. Quit being imprisoned by the past. Let the past be the past. Past hurts, past mistakes, and everything that no longer serves you. Never let anything in the past programme you for failure and mediocrity. Do not let anyone or anything plan in your mind seeds of doubt. Determine to make this year the best year of your life. If you are on your back foot determine to leap forward, leapfrog and jump to new heights. If you are down, determine to stand up and be counted. You cannot stay down when you have up-thoughts. If you are in desperate situations, determine to open new chapters and unveil new seasons. This is your year of excellence and greatness.

Power of words

Words are powerful. They create worlds and things. Your experience of life can be traced back to your words. By your words you shape your life. By your mindless words you can also wreck your life. Speak words that build, and inspire boldness. It is not how you feel that matters, but the creative force that you are releasing with your words. Never speak words mindlessly because words are spiritual tools of destiny. Never joke around with self-depreciating words.

Take control of your life by taking control of your words. Get rid of disempowering words and speech patterns. Do not let any toxic words issue forth from your mouth. Do not sow words of discord or bitterness. You cannot habitually speak negative words and then have positive empowering energy. Words shape your beliefs and impact your actions.

In 1906 in an essay on William Dean Howells, Mark Twain wrote: “A powerful agent is the right word. Whenever we come upon one of those intensely right words in a book or a newspaper the resulting effect is physical as well as spiritual, and electrically prompt.” It is not just words in a book, or article; words are powerful and they are electrically charged with creative (and distractive) impulses. Speak to transform, inform and get energy to perform. By your words you announce your future in advance. Issue words with care, knowing you are dealing with a potent force for good or evil. To enlarge your life, expand your vocabulary and your repertoire of positive, life-giving, destiny-creating and nation-building words. Be an agent of positive change, transformational leadership and reformation through your words.

To take charge of your life start by taking control of your words. Notice the words you use and their emotional content. Set a guard on your mouth and catch yourself quickly when you start veering off into depth of negativity, toxicity and better tirades. Replace the words that put you down, and discourage you with the words that empower, uplift and charge you. Put the train of positive experiences into motion through positive, vision-filled, inspiring uplifting words. The power to transform your life’s experience is in your mouth and on your fingertips. What you speak and type, determines what you become and experience. When you change your words you change your life. The seeds and sense of the trajectory of your life are in your                                                                                         words.

Power of dreams

Dreams happen and they come true. Your dreams are not an exception. Dream in colour and not just in grey-scale, half-hearted mode. Everything you dream is capable of becoming a reality. Have faith, take heart and be bold. Dreams are not just the things you see when you are asleep but the desires that you carry in your heart. Dream big and bold, because nothing can stop you except the limitations that you place on yourself. Expand and enlarge your dreams. Fertilise your dreams with focused action.

Refuse to speak anything that does not take you closer to your dreams. Go beyond just wishing for things, and expressing despair and disappointment with people for not supporting you. Transform the dreams in your heart into goals, definite bold pictures and plans that you pursue with all your might. Do not despair because your dreams look bigger than your realities. Keep holding on, working on and trudging on. Dreams have power when they are believed, and worked on. Fertilise your goals and pictures. Hold them as magnificent obsessions. Just keep your mind on the things that you want and not on the things that you do not want. You do not have the pleasant luxury of nursing a wandering mind. Stay your mind on excellence. Focus on greatness.

Power of action

Nothing changes by just being wished for, thought and complained about. Make a determination that you will take action, move and make things happen, starting this moment. Destroy fear and its disabling effects. In place of fear, take action. Do not hesitate or spend time wishing you could take action. If necessary do it scared, but do not stop taking action and moving forward.

While others are complaining that there is no space and there is no opportunity, walk in the light that you see and take massive determined action. Small starts, do not mean that you will never make it. Develop a flight plan and then get into your plane and fly with focus. Take inspired action with an eye that is focused on your goals and desired path.

Arm yourself and be inspired by these words of 1927, words of Max Ehrmann, who wrote the Desiderata, meaning “desired things”. Read this poem aloud often. Make a cutting of it and read it aloud as often as you can:

“Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”

Whatever you may face, be bold and resolute knowing that this is a beautiful year. It is your year and there is space for you to fly, explore and unleash your greatness. Take bold action, speak bold words and think bold thoughts. God for greatness and excellence in every detail.

Committed to your greatness.
