THERE was an air of optimism at St John’s College as the Super 12 Hockey tournament made a return after a two-year Covid-19-induced hiatus.
Twelve schools — Falcon College, Christian Brothers College, St John, Gateway, Petra, Hillcrest, Peterhouse, Lomagundi, St Georgianas, St John’s College, Hellenic and Eaglesvale — converged in the capital for the three-day tournament that began on Friday and ends today.
However, the big news of the day turned out to be the second-tier tournament, which is rumoured to be in the works.
“So far, the tournament started off well and we are making steady progress,” said Nail Milner, coach of the host school.
“It has not happened in the last two years due to the pandemic and it was nice to have the boys end the season with this top tournament again.
“There is talk of a second-tier tournament, so we could have another group of 12 schools that didn’t qualify for this particular tournament also meeting.
“It’s quite possible, it could happen so that we can continue to grow the sport.”
The tournament is being used as trials for the national schools’ team that will face Zambia during the Heroes Day holiday.
After that, the team is also expected to take part in the 2023 FIH Hockey Junior World Cup Qualifiers.
