Twelve lucky babies walked away with early Christmas presents yesterday at The Sunday Mail Baby of the Year competition prize giving ceremony held at the Rainbow Towers.

The competition which has been running from August comprised of two categories which are 0-9 months and 13-36 months.

Malachi Makina and Evana Punungwe (0-12 month’s category), Prosper Wakatama and Tinodanana Satande (13-36 months) scooped the first prizes.

Each winner walked away with US$500 cash voucher courtesy of Sunday Mail one month subscription as well as a baby certificate courtesy of The Sunday Mail.

Apart from US$500, the top winners also received a US$500 shopping voucher courtesy of Jet Stores, became the face of Jet baby brand ambassadors, a baby blanket and nappy bag courtesy of Jet Stores.

Ashmil which is an up market infant and nursery school offered free term fees, uniforms and activities to the winners worth US$1200.

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, the Sunday Mail deputy editor, Munyaradzi Huni congratulated the winning babies and their parents. He also thanked the sponsors who continue to support The Sunday Mail.

“I want to thank you all for sending through your entries to The Sunday Mail, it simply shows your faith in the paper, which as you know is the country’s leading family newspaper.

“It is amazing when your child wins the competition but I want to tell all parents here and those whose babies did not make it to the finals that all babies are beautiful as they are a gift from God,” he said. “We thank our sponsors for partnering with us for the smooth running of this event.” Mr Huni promised a mega event next year saying: “Next year we are going to have a big event under this competition, we are going to include modelling and dancing. I urge our partners Jet Stores to consider these winning babies when they advertise their products.”

The first runner up Kelly Chiyangwa and Lance Murape from 0-12 months category, Laura Mudzamiri and Tinayeishe Regu under 13-36 months category won US$200 cash voucher courtesy of The Sunday Mail, one month subscription of The Sunday Mail and baby certificate .

Jet Stores awards the four with US$300 shopping voucher, baby blanket and nappy bag courtesy of Jet Stores. Luciano Kushanduka and Vera Mwale, Tanatswa Chikwiramakono and Christine Ruzvidzo 0-12months, 13-36 months category respectively were crowned the second runner up.

They received US$100 cash prizes courtesy of The Sunday Mail, one month subscription of The Sunday Mail and baby certificate courtesy of The Sunday Mail.

The four were also awarded with clothing vouchers from Jet Stores worth US$200, baby blanket and nappy bag courtesy of Jet Stores.

Edgars Stores Marketing Executive Ms Rumbie Dzimba appreciated the baby of the competition partnership with The Sunday Mail saying it gave them the opportunity to grow and was a success comparing from the previous ones.

“We have been running this competition for the past three years alone and we find it difficult, but this year’s competition was a success through the partnership with The Sunday Mail”

Speaking at the same event, Zimpapers Harare branch general manager, Mr Samuel Bepe congratulated the winning babies.
