THE importance of rest for learners and teachers is paramount, and so are positive extracurricular activities. Every learner should, therefore, maximise their long school holiday by engaging in the following productive activities:
Review of previous term’s performance
Learners who do not want to repeat the mistakes they made in a previous term should create time to analyse their performance and identify areas that need attention. This will give them the chance to strategise for a new session.
Read books
A long vacation gives learners ample time to read widely to gain knowledge and also broaden their level of intelligence. Learners should read academic books in preparation for the next academic session; as well as inspirational books that can motivate them into becoming great people.
Learn a new skill
Training to acquire a new skill is one of the most productive things any learner can do on a long holiday. These include computer and technical skills. Handwork skills are also important. Doing all this helps condition learners for life after school. Schoolchildren can acquire meaningful work skills online by doing volunteer work or going for job attachment; of course, in consultation with a parent or guardian.
Pick up a new hobby
Trying out new hobbies during the holiday can be a source of fun. This can help learners look at themselves critically and possibly discover a new talent or skill. Schoolchildren can decide to learn how to play instruments, swim, do photography, code, dance, cook and other interesting activities.
Go on vacation
Travelling to interesting places like museums, art galleries, monumental libraries and parks broadens the geographical knowledge of learners, helps them to understand history and enables them to relax their minds.
Holiday coaching
Depending on a country’s regulations, some schools organise holiday lessons to adequately prepare learners for a new class. Taking part in such lessons gives learners a taste of what the new term holds for them, thereby equips them with the knowledge that can help for a quality result.
Engaging in one or two of these productive activities will go a long way in adding value to learners’ mental, physical and academic well-being. It will help learners to be ready to excel in the new academic term. — Wires
