On February 14, 2018, Morgan Tsvangirai, former trade unionist and leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, died after suffering from colon cancer. Tsvangirai was Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity between 2009 and 2013.

Born on March 10 1952, Tsvangirai rose through the ranks of trade unions to become secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions. In 1999, he spearheaded the formation of a labour-backed opposition party, the MDC and contested the following year’s general elections.
