THEY won the league title together at CAPS United in 2016 and they share the same birthday.

For Ronald Pfumbidzai and Devon Chafa, Christmas is extra special as they share the same birthday with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Brazil legend Jairzinho and 1994 CAF African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Amunike of Nigeria are some of the football personalities born on Christmas Day.

Amunike is best remembered for his last-minute strike against Argentina, which helped Nigeria claim gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, United States.

For most Zimbabwean footballers, Christmas is a time for family and an opportunity to relax, away from the public gaze.

The 30-year-old Chafa, who holds a special record of seven Castle Lager Premier Soccer League championship titles with three different clubs, spent the better part of Christmas at an apostolic sect shrine in Waterfalls, Harare, “thanking the Lord for the Blessings”.

“I was kumasowe (apostolic shrine).

“Afterwards, we went out briefly with my family,” said Chafa who won four straight league championship medals with Dynamos between 2011 and 2014.

He won another medal with CAPS United in 2016, before bagging two more at FC Platinum in 2018 and 2019.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic wiped off the 2020 season, Chafa was aiming to win the championship with Ngezi Platinum Stars.

South Africa-based left-back Pfumbidzai, who turned 26 on Christmas Day, could not spend much time out as his pregnant wife, Graduate, is almost due.

“We went out to eat for a few hours and then came back home for some more fun.

“My situation is a bit tricky. I can’t travel long distances or spend hours out because my wife is pregnant and is almost due.

“Today (yesterday) is also her birthday, so we will be having fun at home,” revealed the Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder.

France-based striker Tino Kadewere has been scoring for fun in the French Ligue 1 and chose to have some more fun off the field with his family in Johannesburg.

The Olympic Lyon striker organised a surprise party for his family members on Christmas Day, two days after scoring for the French giants in a 3-0 rout of Nantes in a French Ligue 1 match at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon.

Kadewere now has seven goals in 16 appearances for Olympic Lyon.

Lyon went into the Christmas break topping the French Ligue 1 table with 36 points from 17 matches.

“It was a surprise for the whole family,” Kadewere’s brother, Prosper, told The Sunday Mail Sport from Johannesburg yesterday.

Former Warriors skipper and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, Willard Katsande, danced the night away with his family, listening to some tunes from his favourite artiste, Alick Macheso.

“I am a big fan of Macheso, tisu vanhu vacho veMberikwazvo (Macheso’s band name) so obviously, I had to play his music on Christmas Day,” said Katsande.

“I always try something new every Christmas and this one was indeed a different one. My family is here in Johannesburg, so we managed to play some games in the garden before we had a braai.

“Later on, we danced to music from mukoma Macheso, it was all fun,” said the 34-year-old midfield enforcer.

CAPS United winger, Phineas Bhamusi, went back to his roots in Mutare to catch up with family and childhood friends.

“Christmas is always a good chance to spend more time with family. I spent mine in Mutare with my parents.

“I was born and bred in Mutare so it is always cool to reconnect with your roots,” said the former Buffaloes forward.

Triangle defender, Obey Mwerahari had some time to share with the needy in Chitungwiza.

“After spending some time with my close friends and relatives at home, I also had time to share with the needy here in Zengeza.

“We had a braai and time to catch up with friends too since I was away in Triangle for some time,” said the former Dynamos right-back.

For some like Marvelous Nakamba, who plies his trade in the English Premier League, there was not much rest as the world’s most popular league doesn’t break for the Christmas holiday.

Nakamba’s Aston Villa played Crystal Palace yesterday.
