THERE is no justification for the killing of women and children in the Gaza Strip, Palestine Ambassador to Zimbabwe Tamer Almassri has said, following Israeli forces’ recent attack on Palestinians.

On Friday, Israel launched missiles throughout the besieged Palestinian enclave, killing several innocent people, including a five-year-old girl, and a 23-year-old woman.

The bombarding continued yesterday, amid fears over the death of more innocent people.

Commenting on the attack, Ambassador Almassri told The Sunday Mail that the unprovoked act was a grave violation of human rights which should not go unpunished.

“We strongly condemn the brutal aggression against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip by the Israeli occupation forces, which targets civilians, children women, and infrastructure.

“We are horrified by the Apartheid Israel’s airstrikes last (Friday) night that killed 15 people, including a 5-year-old child in the Gaza Strip. Over 104 people have been injured,” he said.

Ambassador Almassri called on the international community to join Palestine in calling for the immediate stop to the repeated heinous acts which are taking the lives of innocent civilians.

He said Palestine will not fold but will remain resilient in the face of adversity.

“Israel cannot remain a State above the law. Its leaders and perpetrators of violence and massacre should be brought to book.

“This entrenched Israeli occupation, which has become indistinguishable from practices of apartheid, is based on the institutional discrimination of Palestinians,” he said.

In a statement, Palestine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Israel’s actions were a breach of international law including the Geneva Convention and United Nations resolutions.

“The State of Palestine condemns the Israeli occupation’s premeditated assault on the Palestinian people in Gaza.

“The Ministry calls on the international community, in particular the Security Council and High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention, to take immediate action to bring a halt to this Israeli military aggression against the defenceless Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and to save human lives.”

The Ministry said the international community can do more to come to the country’s aid as double standards had only encouraged Israel’s impunity and allowed for wanton killing and destruction to go on endlessly.

“The absence of international accountability continues to encourage Israel, the colonial occupying power, to persist in carrying out serious international crimes against the Palestinian people, trampling on their human rights and causing widespread death, injury and wanton destruction.

“The Security Council’s paralysis in particular and failure to provide protection has led Israel to believe that it has the green light to kill Palestinians, including children, at will and that it can perpetrate its crimes without any consequence.”
