A second string Nichrut stormed into the second round of the Chibuku Super Cup after burying pre-match favourites Black Rhinos at the National Sports Stadium yesterday.

A howler by Black Rhinos keeper Ashley Reyners and an own goal by central defender Shadreck Jimu gifted Nichrut the win.

Substitute McDonald Makuwe scored for Chauya Chipembere.

The win left Nichrut coach, John Nyikadzino, who rested most of his first team players for this tie, dreaming about lifting the Chibuku Super Cup.

“ l am surprised we won this match because we were only focusing on the league and so we used second string players.

“Those who played today were not playing league games but they came out to be the guys.” he said.

“I told my guys to go and enjoy the game and I am surprised we won it and we are moving to the next round.

“We are going to use the same guys because they have shown that they can do it.”

Nyikadzino also believes this win will be a boost in their quest to survive relegation.

Nichrut were in front after 36 minutes of play when Rhinos defender Jimu turned a Temba Ndlovu cross into his own net. Then came Rayners’ howler in the 68 minutes, the goalkeeper failing to control a Bruce Homora back pass before chasing the ball into his own net.

Black Rhinos gaffer Herbert Maruwa was naturally disappointed.

“I am very disappointed because we were supposed to win this one, especially coming from a big win (against Mutare City). Maybe it was just an issue of complacency, especially in the first half,” said Maruwa, whose charges walloped Mutare City 7-0 in the league last weekend.

“After missing a lot of chances and conceding own goals, we tried to come back but it was too late and it’s difficult to chase a game but we are in the right direction because we are safe in the league,” he said.
