ZIMBABWE has reaffirmed its commitment to clear landmines and promote victim assistance as part of its efforts to achieve a mine-free zone.

The country has made significant progress in mine clearance, with over 96 percent of minefields cleared since independence.

Speaking during Zimbabwe’s National Stakeholder Dialogue in Harare on Tuesday, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri highlighted the importance of support from all stakeholders, including the donor community.

“To achieve a world free of landmines, there is need for concerted efforts from all stakeholders, including the donor community,” she said.

“There is also a need to engage affected communities, foster bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and demonstrate unwavering commitment by all state parties to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

“It is our hope that deliberations during this workshop will help unlock funding for mine action in Zimbabwe as completion of mine clearance is hinged on sustained funding from Government and current and new donors.”
