ZIMBABWE is progressing on measures that gauge average achievement in key dimensions of human development, with country moving into the Medium Human Development category, as the human development index marginally rose from 0.549 in 2021 to 0.550 in 2022, according to the latest United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Development Report 2023-2024.
UNDP says “the closer this number stands to 1.0, the higher the level of human capability and individual choice”.
Zimbabwe is ranked 22nd in Africa and is one of the best 10 countries on the continent on mean years of schooling.
The country is also one of the best 15 countries in the Gender Development Index, with a value of 0.936 out of 10.
Speaking at the launch, UNDP Zimbabwe resident representative Dr Ayodele Odusola said the country is making significant strides towards achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
“Towards eliminating hunger, UNDP and the Government of Zimbabwe have supported over 40 000 farmers in southern Zimbabwe with climate-smart crop varieties, producing nutritious produce resistant to climate stress,” he said.
“These efforts have produced yields as high as 74 percent beyond traditional harvest levels, supported by climate-change informed infrastructure, such as automatic weather stations, rain gauges, hydro station, and irrigation facilities — with over 1,1 million beneficiaries.”
