Zimbabwe has recorded its highest number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in three years, raising concerns about a potential reversal of HIV prevention progress.
The spike in new STI cases suggests that some locals may be engaging in unprotected sex, a trend that could undermine the country’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.
Sinokuthemba Xaba, the National Condom and Male Circumcision coordinator at the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC), revealed this during a media training session on HIV Reporting, hosted by the National AIDS Council (NAC).
According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, cases of vaginal discharge increased from 45 807 in 2023 to 46 859 in 2024.
In men, urethral discharge cases also rose from 40 153 to 41 888 during the same period.
