NEW: ZIFA EGM to proceed

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Assembly’s extraordinary general meeting (EGM) will go ahead as scheduled, despite reports FIFA will reject the outcome of the crucial indaba, a councillor has said.

The EGM is set for Harare on Saturday.

Northern Region chairperson Martin Kweza, who has also been pushing for the EGM, has dismissed an e-mail that is being circulated by suspended ZIFA CEO Joseph Mamutse, which is purportedly coming from FIFA, as fake.

The e-mail attempts to pre-empt Saturday’s EGM as FIFA are quoted declaring that nothing short of the re-instatement of the suspended Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA Board will force FIFA to lift Zimbabwe’s ban from international football.

“Firstly, we note that the e-mail constitutes a departure from the norm in that it is not on the official FIFA letterhead for authentication.

“We further note that it’s addressed to Sirs and we take this to refer to Messrs Kamambo and Mamutse and no one else in particular, in pursuant to their previous discussions (with FIFA) notwithstanding bail conditions being faced by Mr Kamambo,” wrote Kweza in a press statement on Friday.

“The letter does not in any way opine that the scheduled EGM be cancelled, neither does it declare the EGM unlawful.

“It reiterates the conditions for reinstatement to FIFA, which are already in the public domain and largely a matter between FIFA and the Government, through the Sports and Recreation Commission.

“Apart from that, we will not speculate on reasons. Why then the said e-mail would have been shared with the generality of all stakeholders, as this seem to be a private discussion between the parties.”

He added that the EGM is proceeding as advised, as it has been convened in accordance with ZIFA’s constitution.
