NEW: ZEC in voter registration glitch

THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says it is facing intermittent voter registration challenges due to load-shedding, which is affecting the charging of biometric voter registration (BVR) kits.

In a statement Tuesday morning, ZEC said the problem is being compounded by cloudy weather conditions that have reduced the efficiency of its solar systems.

The commission, however, assured the public that prospective voters would be registered despite the technical glitches.

“This is due to shortages of electricity affecting the charging of BVR kits,” reads the statement.

“The situation is also worsened by the cloudy weather, which affects the solar-powered BVR kits.”

ZEC has embarked on a 10-day voter registration mop-up exercise ahead of this year’s harmonised elections.
