NEW: Woman seeks peace order against husband over property destruction

A Harare woman has turned to the courts for protection against her husband, alleging that he damaged windows and doors at their home during a violent outburst.

Magret Chikengezha appeared before the Harare Civil Court on Thursday seeking a peace order against her husband Dishton Chikengezha.

She expressed fear for her safety.

“He becomes violent whenever he is drunk,” said Magret.

“Last week, he damaged our home’s windows and doors during a heated argument. I was terrified and believed he was capable of harming me.

“I have tried to resolve our issues amicably, but his behaviour keeps getting worse. I’m afraid the situation will escalate if nothing is done.”

Dishton, however, denied intentionally damaging the property.

“We had a disagreement and things got out of hand,” he said.

“I never meant to harm my wife or damage our home.”

Presiding magistrate Ms Meenal Narotam ruled in Magret’s favour, issuing a peace order that prohibits Dishton from threatening or damaging his wife’s property.
