NEWLY appointed Sekhukhune United coach, Kaitano Tembo, expects fellow Zimbabwean Willard Katsande to play a significant role in midfield for the DStv Premiership side.

This is despite reports that the former Warriors and Kaizer Chiefs skipper, who is now 36, had been asked to retire.

According to KickOff.com, Katsande was on Thursday recalled from his proposed ‘semi-retirement’ to continue playing in the elite South African league.

A proposal had, reportedly, been made during the off-season that Katsande spends the second year of his contract in a non-playing role at Sekhukhune.

The former Ajax Cape Town and Gunners man would have taken an ambassadorial role, given the profile he has built in South Africa.

“Katsande has built himself into a recognised brand name through the 12 years that he spent in South Africa with other prospering interests outside football.

“This website can now confirm that the defensive midfielder was informed about the change of plans over the weekend and returned to training on Monday at Sekhukhune.

“He will now provide the grit in front of the defence,” wrote KickOff.

According to the publication, what prompted the club into making that decision was the fact that no able replacement was found for Katsande, who played 18 games for Sekhukhune United last season.

There has been no such respite however, for other Zimbabwean veterans – Tapuwa Kapini and Evans Rusike – who were released by the Johannesburg club.
