NEW: Wheat farmers urged to intensify planting

WHEAT farmers have been urged to stick to the planting window to get good yields.

Experts encourage farmers to plant in the month of May to avoid frost and pests during critical growth stages.

In a statement, acting director of communication and advocacy in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Mrs Barbra Machekano said wheat planted in May has better chances of producing good yields.

“Critical growth stages need desirable climatic conditions, so farmers need to ramp up planting. Sticking to the stipulated planting window of May 1 to May 31 ensures that farmers avoid frost during the flowering and grain filling stages.

“Farmers should also avoid the coincidence of crop maturity with rain to prevent pre-harvest sprouting,” said Mrs Machekano.

Zimbabwe is targeting a wheat harvest of 600 000 tonnes from at least 120 000 hectares.

“Government has ring-fenced power and water to ensure flawless crop irrigation. Inputs are being availed on time, while mechanisation and payments to farmers are being prioritised,” she said.
