The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through the Green Climate Fund, on Wednesday donated five vehicles to the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement.

The Green Climate Fund is a fund established within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as an operating entity of the Financial Mechanism to assist developing countries in adaptation and mitigation practices to counter climate change.

Said UNDP deputy resident representative Ms Madelena Monoja:

“The vehicle support will enable partners in the provinces and districts to be present on the ground as they support 21 irrigation schemes to revitalise and climate-proof irrigation infrastructure.”

The support is intended to complement Government efforts incapacitating the Ministry to achieve the climate adaptation milestones as outlined in the country`s National Climate Response Strategies and Policies.

Locally, the Green Climate Fund project is being implemented in 15 districts across three provinces, namely: Manicaland (Buhera, Chimanimani and Chipinge), Masvingo (Bikita, Chivi, Chiredzi, Masvingo, Mwenezi and Zaka) and Matabeleland South (Beitbridge, Gwanda, Insiza, Mangwe, Matobo and Umzingwane).
