Condolence messages are pouring in for football legend and former Dynamos defender Misheck Chidzambwa, who passed away on Thursday.

He will be best remembered for being the first Zimbabwean captain to lift a major international trophy.

He was 66.

Chidzambwa, who is younger brother to the legendary former player and coach Sunday, had been unwell for the past year.

He becomes the second Zimbabwean football legend to die inside a month following the passing on of David “Yogi” Mandigora, another ex-DeMbare player who became the first Soccer Star of the Year after Independence in 1980.

Chidzambwa captained Zimbabwe to their first piece of major silverware in 1985 when the Warriors clinched the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

He was also the first coach to lift the Cosafa Cup in 2000 when Zimbabwe thrashed Lesotho 6-0 on aggregate.

He also had coaching stints at Tanganda, Chapungu, Sporting Lions and Blue Ribbon.

Chidzambwa’s former teammate at Dynamos Laban Kandi is devastated.

“I have now lost two longtime friends inside one week. Yogi (Mandigora) was one of the brides’ man at my wedding in 1979, while Misheck Chidzamwa was my best man. I am so sorry Mukoma Sunday and the whole Chidzambwa family. May he RIP indeed!”

Former Blue Ribbon defender Charles Manjera paid tribute to his mentor.

“My condolences to the Chidzambwa family. May his soul rest in peace. Go well my coach at Blue Ribbon,” said Manjera, who now owns Dreamers Academy in Chitungwiza.

Zimbabwe Soccer Coaches Association chair Bheki Nyoni feels the football fraternity has lost another legend.

“Sad indeed. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
