NEW: Tobacco revenues rise to US$709m

Tobacco sales have generated US$709 million as at day 55 of the marketing season, representing a marked increase from US$456 million a year ago, according to the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB).

“A total of 235 million kg of the golden leaf were sold at an average of US$3 per kg by May 30, 2023,” said TIMB in an update.

About three million bales have been sold since the beginning of the marketing season.

Auction floors have taken delivery of 17 million kg, while contractors account for 218 million kg.

The highest price achieved to date is US$6,10 per kg, while the lowest is US$0,10c.
