NEW: Tobacco farmers warned of increased foliar disease risk

TOBACCO farmers have been urged to prepare for a potential rise in foliar diseases as persistent wet conditions create a favourable environment for infections.

Kutsaga Research Station plant pathologist Mr Mike Marunda said foliar diseases, which primarily affect tobacco leaves, pose a significant threat to both yield and quality.

“The Meteorological Services Department has forecast increased rainfall in the coming weeks, which could accelerate the spread of diseases such as angular leaf spot, Alternaria leaf spot and frog eye,” he said.

“If not managed properly, these diseases could severely impact productivity.”

According to Kutsaga, chemicals such as Bion 50 WG, Kasugamycin, Vacciplant and combinations of triazoles and strobilurins can be used to manage foliar diseases.
