Over the past couple of days, Roki’s latest release, “Patati Patata”, has set tongues wagging in music circles.

While the track, which features Congolese superstar Koffi Olomide and Rayvanny from Tanzania, has been met with mixed reviews, what cannot be ignored is the fact that it has been attracting some serious numbers on YouTube as it surpassed two million views in 48 hours.

This is a feat that is yet to be achieved by any local artiste, with many having to wait for days, if not weeks, to get past the million-view mark.

Hate it or love it, some might argue that this is the biggest song in the country right now.

It comes as no surprise that the release has generated so much interest considering the hype that had been building up from the moment Koffi landed in the country to the day it launched.

The track was produced by Oskid at Passion Java Records, with the likes of Sweezy, Dallas and Gerald Zezuru Mushure being behind the visuals.

Just like any major song featuring international heavyweights, “Patati Patata” was always going to be under the microscope, with opinions flying left, right and centre.

Roki has basically turned the social media space into a warzone, with some praising the song, while others are shooting it down for one reason or the other.

The part where Koffi Olomide throws in President Mnangagwa’s name has been a major talking point, which has seen blows being exchanged, albeit not physically but rather on various social platforms.

Rhumba connoisseurs, however, can confirm that namedropping has always been a part of that genre, as Congolese artistes are always shouting out names of prominent individuals, including politicians and wealthy socialites.

It is actually the norm.

All that aside, one question that continues to linger is that of the song being good or bad.

On YouTube, the song has so far attracted 32 000 likes opposed to a measly 3 000 dislikes, which points to the fact that most of the people who have watched the video like it, if those stats are to be used as approval ratings.

Passion Java Records has once again proven that they mean business when it comes to promoting local talent if the investment put into this project is anything to go by.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail, Passion Java Records manager Denford Saunyama said they are committed to take local music to greater heights.

“We are excited to have made history and it resonates with our mission to promote local music and take it on a regional and global scale,” said Saunyama.

“Roki’s achievement is just about the beginning as there are a lot of artistes that we have signed.”

Roki’s marriage with the record label has set him on a comeback trail, as his recent releases, including “Zviriko” and “Uchandifunga”, are also doing very well.
