PREMIER Netball League (PNL) champions Platinum Queens’ preparations for the 2022 season are in full swing, and the Zvishavane-based side have set their sights on defending the title.

The league, which was established in September, ran a crush programme under the bio-bubble concept.

“Ma Primary”, as they are known in netball circles, won the inaugural PNL title, finishing the season undefeated last year.

Harare City and Ngezi Platinum Queens finished second and third, respectively.

Head coach Simbarashe Mlambo said their priority is defending the title.

“As defending champions, we want to maintain our position by all means, and preparations are key to achieving that target,” said Mlambo.

“We had a brilliant inaugural season last year.

“In fact, it was not just about us, but the entire Zvishavane area.

“They had their eyes on us and after impressing them, we got to maintain the momentum.”

Mlambo has retained his entire squad and added a new face in Esther Kasiku.

The 18-year-old, who is also a former Pamushana player, comes in to boost the mid-court and seems to have already charmed the gaffer.

“Kasiku is proving to be a valuable and energetic player.

“I believe she fits well into the future of the club,” he said.

The team has so far played a handful of practice matches against Bulawayo’s Panthers, Northern Stars from Karoi and their male counterparts Platinum Kings.

“What is important is making the game enjoyable and fun to play and watch,” said the gaffer.

“After the practice games, we have identified a few areas that need to be worked on and polished up a bit.

“I am glad to report that we are in the right direction.”
