NEW: Palestine reflects on loss of liberties

The Embassy of Palestine in Zimbabwe on Tuesday flew its flag at half-mast, to observe 104 years since the Balfour Declaration.

The Balfour Declaration was a public statement issued by the British in 1917, supporting the creation of what they called a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine.

In a statement, the Embassy of the State of Palestine to Zimbabwe said November 2, 1917 was an ominous day in their history.

“Today, the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Harare is flying the Palestinian flag at half-mast in remembrance of the Balfour Declaration, which was the beginning of the process of a colonisation project by the Zionist Organisation consented by the imperialist power, United Kingdom on 02 November 1917,” the statement read.

The Declaration was a letter written by British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lionel Walter Rothschild, in which he expressed the British government’s support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

Palestine to date argues that the declaration and its consequences were unjust to her people.

“It is a day to remind the world how a Zionist movement was initiated to illegally occupy a sovereign land of Palestinians with no regards to the rights of the indigenous inhabitants and till today has been violating all international laws and ignoring every single UN resolution,” the Embassy said.

Zimbabwe and Palestine share struggles of being victims of imperialist indiscretion, battling sanctions and Zionist occupation respectively.
