THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) on Tuesday introduced new uniforms for inmates, in a development meant to do away with the old garb, which was associated with colonial and historical injustices.

Female prisoners will now put on pink dresses, while men will wear orange long-sleeved shirts and trousers in winter, and short-sleeved shirts and shorts in summer.

Government also commissioned 62 vehicles for the ZPCS as part of efforts to improve efficiency within the organisation.

Launching the new uniforms at the Harare Central Prison, Justice Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said:

“These changes, ladies and gentlemen, are meant to dispense colonial historical injustices out of our minds.

“While it will also bring hygienic improvement, it will also decolonise our minds from the harsh memories of sons and daughters who were tormented by colonial cruelty.”
