The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has addressed concerns over a viral video circulating on social media, which appears to show a haulage truck sinking along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road.
The Ministry said the incident actually took place on the old Masvingo Highway, near the 42km peg which is close to Bhati Shops, and not on the current detour of the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Ministry said the affected section is a strip road leading to a damaged low-level crossing structure over the Tugwi River, which is no longer in use.
“This section of the road is not part of the current detour along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway,” reads the statement.
The section in question was allocated to Fossil Contracting.
However, a representative from Fossil Contracting has denied that such an incident occurred on their watch.
A site visit by authorities confirmed that a haulage truck got stuck on the old highway.
Further investigations showed that the truck driver was attempting to bypass the designated detour and reconnect to the existing highway, which led to the mishap.
