LADY Chevrons coach, Gary Brent, is excited that the duo of Josephine Nkomo and Modester Mupachikwa, is joining English-based sides.

Brent believes this will play a pivotal role in bringing a competitive edge to the national team.

Nkomo joined South North Cricket Club last month, while Mupachikwa signed up for Spencer Cricket Club for the 2022 season earlier this week.

This brings to three, the number of Lady Chevrons plying their trade abroad.

Brent reckons the moves are key to the development of women cricket in the country.

“Modester and Josephine’s going to the UK is very important for them, for their development and for the country’s cricket development. They will get to play on different conditions and also get to play with different players.

“There is a lot of pressure that comes with that and this will be a really good experience for them and for us as a country,” said Brent. The Lady Chevrons have set a training base in India ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers to be hosted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in September.

The coach feels the entire team will benefit.

“They will share their experiences with the Lady Chevrons, and all other girls in the Zimbabwe cricket women set-up when they come back.

“The shared experience that they will gain is what will make us better, and that is what it is all about.

“I am happy that our girls are getting the chance to play competitive cricket outside Zimbabwe. It is an exciting time for the girls and cricket in Zimbabwe,” Brent said.

Lady Chevrons wicketkeeper, Mupachikwa, made her debut for the national team at the age of 14 and has so far played eight One Day International (ODI) matches scoring 101 runs and 28 T20 Internationals, which yielded 621 runs.

The 25-year old is currently ranked number eight for most runs by a wicketkeeper in T20 Internationals.

Nkomo has featured in six ODI matches, scoring 164 runs, and has contributed 281 runs in 26 matches in T20 Internationals.
