ZIMBABWE is set to build over 300 new schools across the country next year in a bid to address the national schools deficit, which currently stands at approximately 3 000.
The initiative, which will be spearheaded by the Government, will also see development partners and private individuals contributing to the programme.
In an interview on the sidelines of a speech and prize-giving ceremony at Quinton Senior School in Chitungwiza, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo said there was need for collaborative efforts to tackle the shortage of schools.
“In 2025, we are going to build more than 300 schools across the country,” said Minister Moyo.
“Some of the schools will be developed by the Government, while others will be developed by stakeholders such as development partners and private individuals.
“We are glad that we have managed to commission over four science laboratories and computer labs at this school. This state-of-the-art structure fulfils the Government’s mantra of improving the quality of education.
“It aligns perfectly with our Heritage-Based Curriculum 5.0, which aims to provide a comprehensive and inclusive curriculum for Zimbabwean learners.”
Minister Moyo warned individuals operating illegal schools.
“The mushrooming of unregistered schools, many of which are converted from houses, is disheartening,” he said.
“We need proper schools that are monitored by the ministry to ensure compliance. Reports of children being abused in these backyard schools are concerning and such institutions lack accountability for their students’ performance. They represent a waste of time and resources.”
He encouraged those who have already constructed unregistered schools to seek formal registration with the ministry to ensure compliance with national standards.
Minister Moyo also underscored the importance of integrating technology and modern infrastructure into the education sector, in line with the Education 5.0 thrust.
He said this approach aims to foster critical thinking and problem-solving.
Quinton Senior School, established in 2020, is led by chief executive officer Pastor Tafadzwa Chikasha, who expressed gratitude to the Government and parents for their support.
