ZIMBABWE’S senior netball team registered their first win of the ongoing African Championships, after narrowly beating hosts Namibia 50-49 in a closely contested clash.

The very physical match saw the Zimbabweans lose some of their centre passes to unforced errors.

This gave Namibia an upper hand, as they utilised their turnovers to open an 18-13 lead in the first quarter.

Returning from the break, the Gems seemed more composed, before relapsing towards halftime to trail by four goals by the break.

Captain Felisitus Kwangwa led from the back to provide a solid defense, as the Gems fought to reduce the gap.

By the end of the third quarter, the Gems were trailing 37-40 before coming from behind to narrowly win by 50-49.

Coming from a heartbreaking defeat against favourites South Africa yesterday, Gems head coach, Lloyd Makunde, said the victory is a morale booster for his charges.

“Despite the win, today we did not play well. We were trailing for the greater part of the game, but we never gave in. After the halftime break, I told them to ensure we do not lose our centre passes and to fight for turnovers.

“However, the fight was enough to boost our confidence as we face a new challenge tomorrow,” said the gaffer.

Gems take on Malawi at 3pm on Thursday.
