THE availability of fuel is key to the success of the country’s Command Agriculture program, and easy access to the commodity by farmers could boost production in the new farming season, a legislator has said.

Chegutu West MP, Honourable Dexter Nduna – whose constituency is renowned for both farming and mining activities – also called for the provision of local currency fuel to farmers.

The legislator hailed the recent opening of a Trek service station in Chegutu.

Trek Chegutu, which is the franchise’s 30th service station in the country, will also provide fuel for Command Agriculture to farmers in and around Chegutu.

Command Agriculture is a Government scheme aimed at ensuring food self-sufficiency in the country.

It targets both A1 and A2 farmers, as well as Government institutional farms.

“We are elated as the people of Chegutu that Trek is here, I know you are going to support Command Agriculture, which is very commendable,” he said.

“I want people to know that we consume 4 million litres of Command Agriculture fuel per season here in Chegutu alone. But these farmers have been going to Kadoma to collect that fuel.

“So, we congratulate Trek for ameliorating this problem and making sure that fuel is brought closer home. Fuel is dear to our agricultural projects here in Chegutu.”

Chegutu has a population of about 74 000, and an estimated 4 000 motorists.

Honourable Nduna also implored Trek to sell some of its fuel in local currency, for the benefit of locals who do not earn foreign currency.

Trek managing director, Mr Innocent Mugwizi, said Chegutu is a strategic location for the energy company.

“This is the biggest Trek service station in Zimbabwe in terms of size. Chegutu is a town full of activity, from the time when David Whitehead was still functional,” said Mr Mugwizi.

Trek Chegutu was officially opened by Chegutu Mayor Henry Muchatibaya, who also invited more investors to the farming town.

“Chegutu is a place of farmers, it’s a mineral rich area and the town has the potential to grow,” said Mayor Muchatibaya.

“So, I am urging more investors to come and invest here.”

A number of local engineering companies, including Virmod Engineering and Toobs Engineering, were instrumental in the setting up of Trek Chegutu.
