A FEMALE ZUPCO conductor was last night shot dead by an unknown gunman who was reportedly among the passengers who dropped from the bus in Dzivarasekwa 4 suburb.

The reason for the shooting is yet to be established.

The incident reportedly took place around 9pm when a Lofombo bus, which was making its last trip of the day, was dropping off passengers.

Reports say as the bus was dropping off some passengers, the unknown gunman shot the female bus conductor in the head and she died instantly.

After the shooting the gunman disappeared into the darkness and is still to be accounted for.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the death of the conductor identified as Joy Moyo.

“It’s true, we can confirm that a female ZUPCO conductor was shot dead by an unknown assailant while dropping passengers in Dzivarasekwa 4. The incident took place around 9pm on Monday.

“We are still to establish the motive of the shooting because the assailant just shot the woman and disappeared into the darkness without taking anything,” Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said.

He said the police have launched a manhunt for the gunman and appealed to members of the public for assistance.

“We have launched a manhunt for the gunman and we are appealing to members of the public who might have information which may lead to his arrest to report to their nearest police station,” he said.

ZUPCO public relations officer Mr Obert Chikuku, also confirmed the death of Moyo and said they were puzzled about the motive of the shooting since nothing was stolen.

“It’s true we lost one of our conductors in a shooting in Dzivarasekwa on Monday night,” he said.

“We are still to establish the motive of the shooting because the gunman didn’t rob anything from the bus crew. We are suspecting that he could be having issues with the deceased. We are really sorry to the family for the sad loss.”
