ZIMBABWE International Evans Rusike’s tenure at SuperSport United has come to an end amid revelations the striker is set to leave the DStv Premiership side at the end of the month when his three-year contract with the Pretoria outfit lapses.

Rusike has been part of the Zimbabwean cast at SuperSport United, which is fronted by coach Kaitano Tembo.

Veteran defender Onismor Bhasera and winger Kuda Mahachi are the other Zimbabweans at the club.

Rusike’s star has, however, been waning in the final months of his deal with the club, where he fell in the pecking order and was a far cry from the bustling forward who made an immediate impact on his arrival from Maritzburg United.

According to reports from South Africa, the Warriors forward is one of the two players who had an option of contract extensions, which were, however, not exercised by the club.

This was largely because of the players’ failure to make an impact in the just-ended 2020-21 season.

SuperSport chief executive Stan Matthews confirmed that the duo of Lucky Mohomi and Rusike would be leaving.

“On both players we elected not to take their options as they didn’t do enough to convince the coach they could cement their places in the starting line-up. We can’t be accommodating players who seem happy to sit on the bench,” said Matthews.

Rusike arrived in 2018 from Maritzburg United.

He played 81 matches for Matsatsantsa, scoring nine goals and providing 10 assists during his stint at the club.

As he leaves the club, he has also been credited for helping the team reach three MTN8 cup finals.

“We appreciate their contributions, especially that Evans made in helping us lift the MTN8 and in reaching three consecutive finals, and we wish him well at his future club.

“We hope he too goes on to future success,” said Mathews.
