PRODUCTION of day-old chicks in Zimbabwe increased by 28 percent to 91,6 million in 2021 from 71,4 million a year earlier, raising prospects of increased livestock production.

According to the latest production update by the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, the local broiler industry output is on an upward trajectory.

However, prices of day-old chicks have also trended upwards.

“Overall day-old chick production increased from 71,4 million in 2020 to 91,6 million-day old chicks in 2021, this showed an increase by 28 percent,” reads the report.

“Day-old chick prices increased by 58 percent from an average of US$57 per 100 chicks in 2020 to an average of US$$90 per 100 chicks in 2021.”

Zimbabwe’s poultry industry has improved due to Government’s intervention with policies that protect the local market from cheap imports.
