The Harare City Council has threatened to fine 35 building owners for failure to provide adequate rubbish bins on their premises in line with the city’s regulations.

In a statement, council said city by-laws prescribe the number of rubbish bins that should be on individual premises.

“This serves to notify that council is currently carrying out a bin verification exercise in line with the Harare (Waste Management) By-Laws of 1979, the Harare (Anti-Litter) By-Laws 2016, Harare public health by-laws, Harare licensed premises by-laws and food hygiene by-laws to ensure that building owners have the correct number of bins required at their premises,” reads the statement.

“So far 133 premises and 17 buildings have been visited and our findings indicated that there were 116 bins instead of the recommended number of 192 bins.

“Council has served 35 notices to the building owners and penalties will be imposed if they fail to comply.”
